Christian & Gospel Artists
Melissa Ivette Torres was born in Chicago Illinois on October 5,1981 to her proud parents David & Martha Torres of puertorican decent. She was raised in the North side of Chicago with her younger sister Amarylis. At the age of two, Melissa’s parents discovered their daughter had a special talent. While attending church one evening, Melissa wandered away from her parents. She walked up to the pastor, stretched out her little hand and demanded the microphone. The pastor asked her if she would like to sing and from that day, forward Melissa has dedicated her talent to worship the Lord.
During her childhood, Melissa occasionally sang in her church. She had the opportunity to sing in numerous Church of God talent programs such as Stars for Jesus and Children of Jesus, where she won two first place trophies. In her pre-teen years, she was the main voice for a Christian music group, which participated in different churches and special events. Melissa was also elected by the Chicago Spanish Church of God leaders to sing in local conventions.
Melissa attended Carl Schurz High School Music Academy and was a member of the school choir. She had the opportunity to compete in the city wide soloist competitions and won superior awards for her school. In her desire to excel in what she felt as her calling from God, she attended three years of private voice lessons sponsored by the Board of Education.
Currently, Melissa is studying her third year at Northeastern Illinois University, with hopes of someday becoming a teacher. She is also a worship leader and chorus leader for the kids club at the church she attends, New Vision Community Church in Chicago. Melissa has had the opportunity to participate in various concerts and special events such as, Taste of Chicago, Saved by Grace, and Casa Central’s Television Marathon fundraiser. She has had the honor of sharing stage with spanish Christian artists such as Yadira Coradin, David & Abraham, Dani Driggs, Domingo Quinones, Luis Santiago, Roberto Orellana, Heri Hernandez, All Honor, Miguel Conde, Marian Olavarria, Fortress, Caravan 2:11, Alpha Zamar and many others. With God’s help and perseverance she has managed to achieve one of her greatest goals, the release of her first musical recording "Para Adorarte" (To Praise You!).
